It was then called the Temple or Monastery of St. Thomas - the apostle. Later renovations were started to modify the old structure. The construction of the present church was completed in 1871. The main attraction of the Latin Church Baghdad is its shape. It resembles the shape of a cross with towering dome. The total height of the structure is about 32 feet.

Presently the Latin Church Baghdad is at the disposal of Orthodox Copts of Iraq. Father Ansatas Mary rests within the courtyard of this church. He was an Iraqi scholar and linguist who was born in 1866. He died in the year 1947. Ansatas Mary is one of the most notable dignitaries of Iraq till date.
